Welcome to the personal website of Mr Michael Stechman, MD FRCS.
I am a Consultant Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. This website provides information on my surgical practice and patient advice about specific procedures.
I treat NHS patients at both University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough.
My specialist interests are thyroid and parathyroid surgery and keyhole surgery for groin hernia, incisional hernia, gallstones and adrenal lumps. I run a diagnostic clinic for thyroid lumps and these other disorders at University Hospital of Wales.
I also accept private referrals and see private patients at Spire Cardiff Hospital in Pentwyn, Cardiff.
A hernia is a protrusion of fat or intestine through an abnormal opening in the abdominal wall. It may be brought on or aggravated by heavy lifting and often disappears on lying down. Gallstones are small spherical stones that develop in the bile (a detergent produced by the liver to digest fat) stored in the gall bladder. The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. The gland produces thyroid hormones that control the body’s metabolic rate. There are 4 parathyroid glands, each is normally the size of a lentil or split pea.
